Singing & Facilitation in Health Settings
Facilitating music for health and wellbeing has shown me the profound power of music and singing to unite people, creating a shared sense of vitality and joy within the community. It’s a blessing to be able to work in health settings in this way and give back to society.
I believe in the link between music and wellbeing and I’m passionate about bringing music to community spaces where it wouldn’t usually happen.
This work requires such deep listening and respect for the people receiving it, an open heart, flexibility and humour. It has changed my understanding of music and its role in life and relationships.
I was fortunate to begin my work in the field of music and health as soon as I arrived in the UK - in Sheffield back in 2000.
When I moved to London in 2004, I started working with Live Music Now, performing and giving workshops in schools, retirement homes, homeless shelters and SEN settings. After 10 years as one of their musicians, I became a mentor.
I have facilitated singing workshops for the British Lung Foundation, Breathe Easy and worked extensively for the Sydney De Haan Research Centre for Arts and Health, leading two Singing for Better Breathing groups in South London for their 2015-16 research project.
Since 2013 I’ve been part of the team of Breathe Arts Health Research, performing regularly in wards and outpatient units at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals.
I have offered circlesinging workshops for homeless people with the Choir with No Name and for sufferers from diverse mental health issues with More than Just a Choir. Also for refugees and vulnerable women with the Migrant and Refugee Community Forum.
Since 2016 I have run participatory and therapeutic musical activities for Dementia and Alzheimer’s residents for Jewish Care. In 2017 Islington Council invited me to lead ‘The Singing Well”, a weekly choir within their programme of Arts in Council Estates.
In 2023-24, support from the Arts Council of England enabled Anthropos: Songs of Humanity to deliver musical interventions fully based on vocal improvisation in health settings through two partners, Breathe Arts and Health Research and Jewish Care.
The project involved regular sessions at the Evelina Children’s Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital, as well as a seasonal residency for Jewish Care where we created ‘Through the changing seasons’, a series of fully improvised immersive performances for residents, staff and families alongside a group of dance movement therapists and vocal improvisers.
