Circlesinging and CVI for Vocal Leaders (July 20)

  • 12 Lynton Gardens London, England, N11 2NN United Kingdom (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Throughout these 4 days, a small group of singers and song leaders will have the chance to explore together and deepen the understanding of different forms and models of collaborative vocal improvisation, including Circlesinging. Everyone will have the opportunity to lead and be led by others, as well as acquire some fundamental tools to develop their own improvisational language and musicianship, and gain confidence in group-leading skills.

This seminar is addressed at everyone interested in leading groups of people- singers and non-singers into spontaneous 'in the moment' group singing. These inclusive community music-making moments can be a useful way to integrate people, enhance communication and creativity in schools, courses, retreats, at the workplace… and to generate a flow of wellbeing chemicals in everyone's brain, and a sense of relaxation, warmth, belonging, therefore becoming a meditative practice.

The core elements will be diverse exercises and games in the areas of rhythm, melody construction, use of invented language, harmony and tone quality. We will explore Circlesinging and VoiceOrchestra techniques, grooves and harmonic sequences with two distinct and complementary objectives:

*to create strong, supportive, interesting backgrounds for the singers to explore and develop solo improvisation.

*to empower the singers to create, orchestrate and conduct their own circlesongs and other forms of collaborative music.

Guillermo is interested in the dance between spontaneous music-making, listening, collaboration, sound and silence.

The invitation:

To remember our innate musical intelligence and capacity to share music and meaning with other humans. To sing our essential nature, deepening the quality of our listening. To feel at home within ourselves and let our inner confidence grow… so that we can embrace many ways to learn, in togetherness and by ourselves, that don’t require striving onwards and upwards but instead, dropping deep into the joy and wisdom and creativity that lays within each and every one of us.

If you have any questions, contact me here.

Collaborative Vocal Improvisation @ SOAS Online Summer School 2020

Monday 22nd - Friday 26th June 2020, 6.30 - 8.30pm

Course fee: £100 (£10 per hour of teaching time)

link to sign up: https://bit.ly/vocal_improv_soas

A week of Collaborative Vocal Improvisation (CVI) targeted at adventurous vocalists interested in vocal improvisation, ideally with some previous improvising experience and the confidence to sing in front of others. A virtual ‘laboratory and practice room’, encouraging singers to develop a wider palette and toolkit in their improvisation, to expand their solo singing skills and confidence in the many ways that are viable within the online technologies available.

CVI is when a group of singers create music in-the-moment, each person generating their own sounds and patterns spontaneously and in response to others, starting from an agreed prompt or idea, unfolding from the shared silence or from one person breaking into song. As well as creativity and the courage to sing; mutual listening, responsiveness, flexibility and a willingness and capacity to collaborate are a must.

These qualities can be cultivated through games and exercises where singers develop their own imagination, musicianship, self-confidence and sound in parallel to learning to work as a team and to support each other.

Circu-tribe Retreat at Casa Cares POSTPONED

Circu-tribe: a weekend to experience circle singing and connection. 24 (or 25) - 26 April 2020 @ Casa Cares (30 km from Florence) 16 residential places with all meals included 12 hours of course + Circlesong (Friday evening) EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT (- € 20 for each option) IF YOU REGISTER BEFORE JANUARY 30th registration and information: grozenthuler@gmail.com / whatsapp +447973770942

This weekend is aimed at experienced singers who want to refine their vocality, rhythmic understanding, listening skills and the expression of emotions through singing (many people together = a single beating heart!). The seminar is also aimed at vocal improvisers, who will be able to acquire a new musical vocabulary for their improvisations, as well as to the conductors and participants of the CircleSong groups, to treasure the experience of sharing circular music and the "sense of the tribe" even with people never met before. The CircleSinging will be led by Guillermo, but other facilitators will also have space to conduct and those who wish can integrate the Circles with vocal solos. Circlesinging is an art form, but it is also a personal growth tool that allows you to get in touch with "the wisdom of the body" and with the experience of team work that goes deep. We will work on the refinement of precision in terms of rhythm, harmony, timbre, articulation, improvisation, energy, listening and cohesion. Singing in a circle for a long time can teach us to become better musicians, and it can also become a way to know us as singers and as human beings, to feel the connection with others.
